Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) is a breakaway faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The party was founded by TTV Dhinakaran in 2018 in Tamil Nadu's Madurai.
Dhinakaran is the nephew of VK Sasikala, a powerful confidante of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha.
After winning the RK Nagar byelection by huge margins as an independent candidate, Dhinakaran, On March 15, 2018, launched the party flag and named it "Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazagam". The headquarters of the party is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
In February 2019, Actor Ranjith resigned from the Tamil Nadu state vice-president post in the Paattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and joined AMMK to register his protest on the PMK's decision to join an alliance led by the AIADMK. On 28 March, the AMMK was awarded the gift box symbol after the Supreme Court refused to direct the election commission to issue a pressure cooker as its party symbol
During the general elections of 2019, AMMK contested 38 seats out of the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu but failed win to open its account with zero seats won.
AMMK's allies include the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM and they have been allotted six and three seats, respectively.
Dhinakaran is contesting from Kovilpatti against local AIADMK strongman and Information Minister Kadambur Raju.
Dhinakaran, the nephew of late chief minister Jayalalithaa's close aide V K Sasikala, has decided to contest the elections despite his aunt announcing her decision to stay away from politics and urging her supporters to ensure the victory of the ruling AIADMK and defeat DMK in the polls.
